National Market System
Categories: Stocks, Investing and Trading, Bonds and Treasuries,
in the United States, an inter-exchange network system designed to foster greater competition between domestic stock exchanges. Legislated for in 1975, it was implemented in 1978 with the intermarket trading system that electronically links eight markets: American, Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago, New York, Pacific, Philadelphia, and NASDAQ. It allows traders at any exchange to seek the best available price on all other exchanges that a specific security is eligible to trade on.
