Became the chairman of AMR Corp. and American Airlines in 2004 and the president and CEO of AMR and American one year earlier in 2003. Arpey joined American Airlines in 1982 as a financial analyst and held a variety of management positions before rising to chief executive. As its leader, Arpey helped American recover from a scandal it suffered under its previous CEO, and avoid bankruptcy.
